MCHC Editorial Policy

Our editorial approach

The report pairs the %ENTITY% index with the other red cell measurements taken from the same sample. Reading them as a group is the intended use, since the index is calculated from two of those measurements and inherits their meaning.

Laboratories print their own reference interval for %ENTITY% because intervals are established locally. Two reports from different laboratories may therefore show slightly different ranges for the same result, and comparing the number across reports without the interval can mislead.

Sourcing and review

Because %ENTITY% is a ratio, the two inputs can move together and leave the index apparently unchanged. That is why a clinician reads the red cell count, the cell size, and the hemoglobin amount as a set rather than treating any one of them as a standalone answer.

Several things shape a %ENTITY% result before any clinical question arises. The instrument, the reagents, the age of the sample, and the way it was handled can all nudge the value, and a specimen that sat too long before analysis may be repeated for that reason alone.
